This isopropyl alcohol is 70%. According to the Center for Disease Control, hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol is effective at killing the novel COVID-19 coronavirus, along with many other types of viruses, bacteria, and germs.
Hand sanitizer recipe using 70% isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol:
10 ounces alcohol
3 ounces aloe vera gel
In the above ratio, the final product may be a little thin and may work better as a spray.
To thicken: add 1tsp xanthan gum to the 3oz of aloe vera and mix thoroughly before adding to the alcohol.
Work in small batches, as I do not know if the ratios change in larger batches.
Add approx. 10 drops of your preferred essential oils for fragrance.
*Some essential oils have been shown to exhibit natural anti-microbial and anti-viral properties, thanks to their terpenes and the plants that they're derived from. Eucalyptus, lavender, oregano, tea tree, and rosemary are a few we carry that are useful and welcome additions to homemade hand sanitizer.
